What I did last summer: #nownextdance
By Now Next Dance 2015 Social Media Interns Meredith Yuhas (Columbia College, SC) and Lexie Thrash (James Madison University, VA)
Meet Lexie Thrash and Meredith Yuhas, this year’s Now Next Dance Social Media Interns in Washington, DC! We had a fantastic, completely inspiring week of mentoring, teaching, and creating work with renowned dance artists in the modern dance community. #nownextdance
Here’s a little taste of our experience…
Intern Meredith here, feeling the airplane tremble as we touch down in DC, my anticipation grows. The week is just beginning and I have only one expectation…to experience something new. #adventure
Monday morning, we worked with the kids and acclaimed dancer turned video game designer Boris Willis on a movement-inspired live video game! Each dancer needs to move, reach, and dance to move through the board and overcome the “ruler.” #dancergames #boriswillismoves #danceaday
By mid-day we have all met and are quickly becoming friends as we snack down on our lunch. #newfriends #danceloftson14 #dancerseat
In residence with us this week is Brooklyn-based Artist Dante Brown and his company Dante Brown/Warehouse Dance! Not only are they working directly with our mentors, but also immersed in a creation process themselves...such a treat for our mentors and mentees to bear witness to! #movementcreation #dbwd
Also a treat this week is the expertise of Maree ReMalia, resident Gaga teacher! Taking our mentors through euphoric and curvaceous classes...and bringing smiles with her repertory from Circulation Project (2015-2017). Preparing for the show on Friday! #gaga #merrygogo
Good morning DC! Another day hard at work started off with coffee and a quick meeting with the mentors before teaching, learning, and growing even more #riseandshine
Intern Lexie enjoying a healthy lunch, bonding with the young dancers and mentors alike, and havin’ fun doing it! #lunchtime #bondingtime
“And I am telling you, I’m not going!”
Practicing the physicality of singing without actually making a sound. Dante’s research for his newest dance event. This experience was exhausting, but so incredibly moving. We ended up using this exercise as a part of our final piece, “Was This His Dream?” #movementmagic #allisonwaldmanphotos
The young dancers loved working on a hip hop piece with Megan Windsor this week! These enthusiastic artists could not wait to share what they had created with family, and were such energetic spirits. #learningandleaping
We just got here and we already have to leave?! What a fantastic week of dance with beautiful mentors and young dancers alike. Thankful for our time in DC together, meeting mentors from all over the nation, and local, growing artists. Sharing our craft with one another is such a gift. #nownextdance #completelyinspired
