As Department Chair Carol K. Walker shares, “The new and unique MFA in Dance at Hunter College, the only public college offering this degree in NYC, draws professional dance artists in performance and/or choreography who are interested in returning to school to add this degree to their resume, enhancing their options for a long and exciting career. Drawing upon the immense offerings in NYC and the opportunity to collaborate with other Hunter and NYC artists, the program offers opportunities for investigation, practice and presentation of each student’s work as an artist, along with studies in aesthetics, teacher education, dance history, and electives, to enable them to explore and to follow their own path and interests. The 60 credit course of study is designed to maximize the talent and scholarly approaches worthy of this advanced degree."
The Hunter College MFA degree enrolled its first students in Fall 2018. The faculty includes Michael Leon Thomas, from the Ailey Company; Pedro Ruiz, Arnhold Artist in Residence; Nicole Wolcott, independent teacher/choreographer; Burke Brown, MFA Yale in lighting design; Celia Ipiotis, Eye on Dance and the Arts, Graduate Dance History; and Carol K. Walker, chair of the Dance Department.
